Colonial Heritage by the Sea
📍 12 min drive from The Lagoon VillaHistoric Site
The Negombo Dutch Fort is a testament to the town's rich colonial history. Originally built by the Portuguese in the 17th century, the fort was later captured and expanded by the Dutch East India Company (VOC), who used Negombo as a key port for the lucrative cinnamon trade.
Today, only the gateway and portions of the original walls remain, but they are remarkably well-preserved and evocative. The fort now forms part of the grounds of Negombo prison, and visitors can view the gateway and outer walls from the surrounding area.
The fort sits close to the lagoon and town centre, making it easy to combine with a visit to the fish market or a stroll along the Dutch Canal. Nearby St Mary's Church, one of the largest Catholic churches in Sri Lanka, is also worth a visit.
Combine with a walk along the Dutch Canal for a half-day heritage trail. The area around the fort and canal is great for street photography.
