A Journey Along Ancient Waterways
📍 8 min drive from The Lagoon VillaNatural & Historic
The Hamilton Canal is a remarkable piece of colonial engineering — a 15-kilometre waterway stretching from Negombo to Colombo, constructed in the late 18th century under British Governor Frederick North. It forms part of a larger canal network that once linked much of coastal western Sri Lanka.
Today the canal is a peaceful escape from the bustle of town, fringed with coconut palms, mangroves and the occasional fishing coracle. Boat rides along the canal offer a tranquil perspective of everyday Sri Lankan life — village scenes, birds wading in the shallows, and the gentle rhythm of the water.
The canal connects the Negombo Lagoon — right on the doorstep of The Lagoon Villa — to a network of waterways that can be explored by small boat or canoe. Sunrise and sunset trips are particularly memorable.
Your villa staff can arrange a private boat trip along the canal. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and your camera — the light on the water is magical at golden hour.
